Vauxhall Opens Doors To Young - The Auto Chanel

LUTON, UNITED KINGDOM – June 12, 2012: Over 700 young students are expected this month to experience true British manufacturing at Vauxhall and explore career opportunities at Britain’s 4th ranked Top Employer – and top automotive employer.

Following last year’s successful roll-out of the See Inside Manufacturing initiative at different automotive manufacturing locations, Vauxhall’s Luton and Ellesmere Port plants are once again opening their doors to local schools and other educational institutions during the month of June.

Sessions will provide a first-hand insight into various career opportunities within the automotive manufacturing arena - also including a plant tour. In addition, various games and fun activities will be available to experience, equally relating to the manufacturing environment.

With a track record of top management succeeding into their leading roles following an undergraduate placement or apprenticeship at Vauxhall, the company certainly has many success stories to tell related to development opportunities: Duncan Aldred, Vauxhall’s Chairman and Managing Director and Phil Millward, Vauxhall’s Director for Human Resources, are two of many examples.

This summer, Vauxhall is once again welcoming over 100 new undergraduates, taking up highly desired work placements at various Vauxhall sites and circa 150 apprentices will be joining Vauxhall’s apprenticeship scheme in engineering or commercial roles, or at Vauxhall retailers.

Apart from exciting career opportunities, young talent can also look forward to a long future with Vauxhall:

The recent allocation of the 7th generation Astra at Ellesmere Port as the lead plant not only secured over 700 new jobs and doubled the number of apprenticeships at the plant but also ensured production of the new model into the 2020s. Last year, Vauxhall’s Luton Van Plant also secured the next generation Vivaro, which will take production of this vehicle well into the next decade.

London braced for fresh travel chaos as tube workers vote for strike - Daily Telegraph

''These are the same key staff who keep services running when demand is at a peak and manage the problems when the lines are hit by breakdowns and failures.

"They deserve respect for the job that they do and not the imposition of inferior working conditions and the threat to jobs.''

But London Underground said the action was unnecessary as officials had already addressed most of the unions concerns.

''We have been in discussion with the unions across the entire Tube network, including the subsurface lines, since 2007 on the impact of changes arising from our upgrading of signalling systems," said Nigel Holness, London Underground's operations director.

''We have already addressed nearly all of the issues raised by the RMT, and I would urge the RMT leadership to continue working with us to help staff prepare for these changes, which will be implemented in five years' time.''

The news comes after staff running the capital's bicycle hire network also threatened to strike during the Olympics over bonus payment.

That 'Boris Bike' strike threat came after 21,000 bus workers in the Unite union are being balloted for strike action that could take place during the games.

Bus operators and TfL are not willing to fund bonus payments for drivers.
